How it works

The tip is a percentage of the pre-tip bill: tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). Add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people for the per-person share.

Splitting on the total-with-tip means everyone contributes proportionally to both the meal and the gratuity — the fair, standard way to divide a shared bill.

Worked example

An $84.50 bill with an 18% tip adds $15.21, for a total of $99.71. Split four ways, that's about $24.93 each.
